The SPAR Proteas of South Africa have claimed the 2024 Africa Netball Cup, defeating Uganda’s She Cranes 65-50 in a commanding final held at the MTC Dome in Swakopmund, Namibia.
This victory secures South Africa’s fourth title in the tournament, adding to their previous wins in 2013, 2019, and 2021, and solidifying their dominance as Africa’s premier netball team.
From the outset, the Proteas controlled the game, establishing an early lead that Uganda struggled to overcome. Uganda, led by star goal shooter Mary Cholhok Nuba and captain Irene Eyaru at goal attack, put up a strong fight but could not close the gap.
Their squad also included Gloria Aya as wing defense, Faridah Kadondi as goalkeeper, Sandrah Nambirige at goal defense, and Mercy Batamuliza at wing defense.
South Africa led 16-12 by the end of the first quarter and extended their lead to 30-24 at halftime. Despite Uganda’s efforts, the Proteas surged ahead with a dominant third quarter, outscoring the She Cranes 20-9 to widen their advantage to 50-33.
As the final quarter concluded, South Africa sealed their victory with a decisive 65-50 scoreline, celebrating yet another triumph in Africa’s most prestigious netball competition.
This win underscores the Proteas’ consistent excellence and highlights their stronghold on the sport in Africa, leaving Uganda with lessons and aspirations for the future.
