Uganda halts refugee status for Ethiopian and Somali nationals

Government cites rising security concerns and irregular entry as new asylum restrictions take effect

The Government of Uganda has stopped granting refugee status to nationals from Ethiopia and Somalia, marking a significant shift in the country’s asylum policy.

According to officials, the decision follows heightened security concerns, an increase in irregular border entry, and the need to review screening procedures for new arrivals. The suspension affects new asylum seekers, while those already granted refugee status will not be affected and will continue receiving protection under existing laws.

Uganda—known globally for its open-door refugee policy and currently hosting more than 1.6 million refugees—says the move is temporary and aimed at strengthening verification processes.

Authorities are now working with the Office of the Prime Minister and UNHCR to manage the transition and ensure that humanitarian standards are maintained during the suspension period.

Government sources indicate that further guidance will be issued after an internal review, including possible timelines on when the policy may be revisited.
