Uganda’s Museveni, DRC’s Tshisekedi skip key important EAC security meeting

The Heads of State reviewed the recent development in North Kivu, particularly the resurgence of violence and called on cessation of hostilities to give chance to the political negotiations due to commence from 16th November 2022, in November 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya.

Uganda’s president Gen. Yoweri Museveni and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)  Félix Antoine Tshisekedi were absent at the High-Level Consultative Meeting of the Summit Of EAC Heads of State on the Peace Process in the Eastern Democratic Republic Of Congo (DRC).

The meeting on 7th November 2022 sat at Sharmar el Sheikh in Egypt on the sidelines of the ongoing Meeting of the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (COP-27). It was chaired by Burundi’s president Évariste Ndayishimiye, the Chairperson of the Summit of EAC Heads of State.

The meeting was attended by Rwanda’s president Paul Kagame, Tanzania’s president Samia Suluhu Hassan, Kenya’s president William Ruto and Rt. Hon. Jean- Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenje, the Prime Minister of the DRC, represented his president.

The EAC Secretary General Dr. Peter Mathuki was in attendance. The communiqué released didn’t indicate a representative from Uganda.

According to the communiqué, the Heads of State reviewed the recent development in North Kivu, particularly the resurgence of violence and called on cessation of hostilities to give chance to the political negotiations due to commence from 16th November 2022, in November 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Heads of State also agreed to appoint a Technical Advisor from each Partner State to support the Facilitator of the EAC Peace process.

The Heads of State also reaffirmed the mutually reinforcing mandates and the complimentary role of the Luanda and EAC – Led Peace Processes and urged consideration of the possibility to harmonise both processes and a final decision will be made during the proposed Peace Summit.
