Underutilization Of The Airline Caused The Losses, Former Uganda Airlines CEO Cornwell Muleya Tells Parliament

Muleya explained that by flying just 33 hours a month instead of at least 10 hours a day together with a lack of partnership to facilitate more routes, the national carrier was not about to make profits.

Former Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Cornwell Muleya has told Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) that underutilization of the Airlines caused the losses in the past years.

Muleya explained that by flying just 33 hours a month instead of at least 10 hours a day together with a lack of partnership to facilitate more routes, the national carrier was not about to make profits.

Muleya was today appearing before the parliamentary committee to respond to issues raised in the Auditor General’s report regarding the national carrier among which include the losses made amounting to over Shs500bn, corruption and mismanagement of office.

The national airline has been in the news for the wrong reasons with the current CEO Jennifer Bamuturaki coming under fire the days she appeared before COSASE. Bamuturaki, who was irregularly appointed by President Yoweri Museveni struggled to explain her professional and education competencies.

Bamuturaki was scheduled to appear before the same committee with Muleya but communicated saying she wasn’t available because other official engagements. The committee chair Joel Ssenyonyi threated to have brought in by police if she continues to abscond and ignore the summons.
