86,582 candidates get first grades as 88,269 fail PLE exams
A total 81,864 passed in First grade, 336,507 in second, 156,290 in third and 69,283 in fourth.
The Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) has said it registered decline in performance by pupils who sat for the 2023 primary leaving examinations.
While releasing the results State House Entebbe, UNEB Executive Secretary Dan Odongo said up to 749,25 candidates registered for PLE COMPARED TO 832,654 in 2022.
A total 81,864 passed in First grade, 336,507 in second, 156,290 in third and 69,283 in fourth.
He said a whooping 88,269 pupils failed the exams and have been advised to repeat.
“It should be noted that the number of candidates in Divison U is quite high, at 88,269 and should raise concern so that they do not just add to the statistics of school drop-outs,” he said.
He noted that there are districts such as Kibuku(31.5%), Madi Okollo(31.5%), Dokolo (28.9%), Kween (28.4%), Namisindwa(28.9%) where the percentages are well above the national average.
“Many other districts have over 20% of the candidates in Division U. It is necessary to find out the causes and address them,” he said.
it should be noted that male candidates performed better than their female counterparts. However, the latter performed better in the English subject.
Performance of Prison inmates
A total of 68 candidates were resgistered as compared to 68 in 2022. Out of the 69 candidates, 60 candidates sat, 2 passed in division 1, 32 obtained division 2, 15 obtained division 3 , 5 obtained division 4 and 6 were ungarded.
