Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, the Executive Director of Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), has been awarded the Rotary Vocational/Service Award by the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda in recognition of his outstanding leadership and contribution to national development through quality statistical work.
The award was presented during a ceremony held at Statistics House in Kampala, presided over by Chief Guest Mike Sebalu, who also serves as District Governor for Rotary District 9213 and is a member of the Rotary Club of Bukoto.
In his remarks, Sebalu commended Dr. Mukiza for exemplifying Rotary’s core values of integrity and service above self, noting that his work aligns with the organization’s mission of creating lasting impact in communities.
“Statistics are not just numbers; they are the foundation for decision-making,” Sebalu said, emphasizing the central role of accurate data in policy formulation, planning, budgeting, and service delivery. He credited UBOS under Mukiza’s leadership for strengthening Uganda’s statistical systems and ensuring that development planning is guided by reliable evidence.
Sebalu also highlighted the rigorous selection process for the award, explaining that nominees are vetted by Rotary members, reviewed by the board, and approved by the general assembly. He noted that Dr. Mukiza stood out for delivering quality statistics across all administrative levels, from national to grassroots.
He further acknowledged Mukiza’s contributions within Rotary, describing him as a member of the Rotary Club of Muyenga and a recognized Major Donor.
In his acceptance speech, Dr. Mukiza expressed gratitude to the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda, describing the award as both a personal honour and a reflection of the collective effort of UBOS staff.
“This award is not only for me personally, but it reflects the commitment of the Bureau and the spirit of collaboration that drives institutional excellence,” he said.
Mukiza underscored the importance of statistics in complementing government programmes, citing initiatives such as health services supported by data-driven planning, including facilities like Mengo Hospital and Nsambya Hospital. He added that UBOS continues to strengthen Uganda’s statistical ecosystem to ensure the availability of timely and reliable data for national development.
He also encouraged UBOS staff to join Rotary clubs to expand their networks and contribute to community service, noting the shared commitment between Rotary and the statistics profession to improving lives.
The President of the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda, Ann Kamugisa, praised Mukiza’s leadership, saying it has enhanced the credibility of UBOS and positioned it as a key pillar in Uganda’s development agenda.
“Through your leadership, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics has become a pillar of national planning, supporting government, the private sector, and development partners,” she said.
Kamugisa added that the award symbolises the club’s appreciation of Mukiza’s impact and the difference his work has made in the lives of many Ugandans.
