Uganda launches motorcycle helmet user guide to boost road safety

The newly launched guide is expected to support ongoing efforts to improve road safety standards in Uganda, where motorcycle transport, commonly known as boda boda, remains a major contributor to road accidents and injuries.

The Ministry of Works and Transport has launched a Motorcycle Helmet User Guide aimed at improving road safety and reducing fatalities among riders and passengers.

The guide, unveiled at the ministry’s offices in Kyambogo, is the result of a partnership between the government and Safeway Rightway Uganda. It is designed to enhance awareness about the importance of helmet use, legal requirements, proper wearing, and maintenance.

Speaking at the launch, the Commissioner for Transport Regulation and Safety, Winstone Katushabe, who represented State Minister for Transport Fred Byamukama, praised the collaboration.

“I commend Safeway Rightway for partnering with the Ministry to develop a Guide that will go far in creating awareness among motorcycle riders on the importance, laws, standards, proper use and maintenance of helmets in order to reduce the number of motorcycle rider and passenger fatalities and serious injuries,” Katushabe said.

Officials noted that the initiative aligns with the Global Plan for the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety, which encourages partnerships between governments and stakeholders, including civil society organizations, particularly in areas of public awareness and advocacy.
