The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki has experienced Uganda’s locally developed electric mobility technology firsthand after joining passengers aboard the E-Bus Express from Jinja to Iganga

During the journey, the Minister interacted with passengers who praised the electric bus service while providing feedback on areas that require improvement. The engagement offered insights into user experiences as Uganda continues efforts to expand and strengthen its electric public transport system.

The Minister was accompanied by officials from the STI–OP Secretariat, engineers from Kiira Motors Corporation, and the E-Bus Express team. The delegation later visited Iganga Technical Institute, where Kiira Motors has leased space through a partnership agreement to establish an electric vehicle charging station.

The charging facility serves as a strategic point for E-Buses operating along the Jinja-Iganga route, supporting reliable operations and the wider adoption of electric transport solutions.

The delegation was received by Kiira Motors Corporation Chief Executive Officer and the management team of Iganga Technical Institute.

Later, the Minister visited the Kiira Motors Corporation Vehicle Manufacturing Plant, where he commissioned the charging plant and inspected ongoing activities at the facility.

During the visit, Eng. Akiiki planted a tree as a symbol of his vision for the continued growth and sustainability of Kiira Motors Corporation.

“Using the leaves as a point of contact, I pray to the Lord that, as this tree takes root, grows and flourishes, may Kiira Motors Corporation also take deeper root, grow and rise to even greater heights,” the Minister said.

The visit underscores Uganda’s ambition to promote home-grown innovation, strengthen local engineering and manufacturing capacity, and position Kiira Motors as a competitive player in Africa’s automotive industry.

Through investments in electric vehicle technology, charging infrastructure, and strategic partnerships, Uganda is seeking to advance sustainable transport solutions while supporting industrial development.
