Uganda’s economy continued to record positive growth signals in July 2026, supported by improved private sector activity, increased business confidence, and stronger export performance, according to the performance of the Economy Report for July 2026.
The report indicates that both the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) and the Business Tendency Index (BTI) remained above the 50-point mark, signalling expansion in economic activity and optimism among businesses about future operating conditions.
The Composite Index of Economic Activity (CIEA) also increased to 193.26 in June 2026 from 190.01 in May 2026, reflecting continued expansion in economic activity during the month.
Meanwhile, Uganda Shilling strengthened against the United States Dollar, appreciating by 0.2 per cent to trade at an average mid-rate of Shs3,704.51 per US Dollar, compared to Shs3,710.64 in June 2026.
The appreciation of the local currency was attributed to increased foreign exchange inflows from remittances, portfolio investments, and export earnings from key sectors, including agriculture, mining, and energy.
Uganda’s export earnings also improved, reaching USD 1.284 billion in June 2026, representing an 11 per cent increase from USD 1.157 billion recorded in June 2025.
The growth in exports was driven by higher earnings from gold, cotton, electricity, tobacco, maize, and flowers, highlighting continued improvement in the country’s external trade performance.
The report notes that the positive economic indicators point to sustained recovery and resilience, supported by increased production, improved business confidence, and stronger foreign exchange inflows.
