Charles chooses the King Charles III name after death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II
A new monarch's name is traditionally announced at the historic Accession Council, which takes place as soon as possible at St James's Palace in London in the days after the death of a sovereign.
Prince Charles, real names Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, has chosen to be go by the name King Charles III after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth, real names Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, who inherited the throne from her father, born Prince Albert Frederick Arthur George.
The Mirror reports that Charles had the option of reigning under a different name to his birth name, just like many previous kings and queens did. There have been whisperings for years that Charles wished to reign as King George VII, the Mirror reported. Choosing King George VII would be a tribute to his grandfather, Queen Elizabeth’s father.
Reigning as the next King George might’ve also symbolised continuity for the House of Windsor, as Charles’ great-grandfather also reigned as King George V. However, after spending decades as Charles, the new king has chosen his own name, just as his mother did.

But Prime Minister Liz Truss referred to King Charles III in her speech outside Downing Street, saying: “Today the Crown passes, as it has done for more than a thousand years, to our new monarch, our new head of state, His Majesty King Charles III.”
