Torrential weather worrying UNEB ahead of national exams
A total of 1, 280, 172 candidates have registered for all three levels of the final examinations – this, UNEB said, indicates an increase of 7.7% of the total candidature.
Uganda National Examination Board (UNEB) is worried weather will affect the upcoming national examinations for primary and secondary schools.
The UNEB chairperson, Prof Mary Okwakol, Tuesday told a seminar for District/City/Municipal Inspectors of school currently ongoing at Silver Springs Hotel in Kampala until 22nd September 2022 that rains and floods are likely to make the roads impassable.
And when this happens, it will be hard for UNEB personnel to deliver examination materials to examination centres.
“If this weather trend continues, so many areas, especially those in the highland zones, will be affected by floods causing blockage of roads and making them impassable,” Prof Okwakol told the seminar.
She, however, said UNEB will assess the situation together without partners, the District Inspectors of Schools, and come up with requests through the education ministry to the emergency response agencies for logistical support in those areas where such support will be needed.
Highland areas of Mbale in eastern Uganda and Rwenzori subregion in western Uganda have in the past weeks experienced life-wrecking torrential rains and floods that have caused loss of human life and left roads and bridges broken.
Last month, UNEB released the 2022 examination timetables for the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
UNEB also released braille versions of the timetables to cater for learners with visual impairment as is in line with their policy of inclusiveness and equitable assessment of learners’ achievements.
This year’s national examinations will commence on 14th October 2022 with the briefing of UCE candidates; thereafter, UCE examinations will run until 18th November.
The PLE examinations will commence with a briefing on 7th November before the actual writing of examinations on 8th and 9th November.
The UACE examinations will commence on 18th November and run until 9th December

Prof Okwakol also affirmed UNEB’s commitment to fight and curb examination malpractice and any form of unprofessionalism as they will be guided by the new UNEB Act which empowers them and expanded the range of examination malpractices not previously covered in the old law.
