A total of 188 vulnerable children at St Charles Nursery and Primary School in Kagadi District have received scholastic and other essential items to support their education and improve their academic performance.

The items were donated by Flobbeto Nursery and Primary School in Hoima as part of the school’s annual charity drive aimed at supporting vulnerable children and promoting a culture of sharing among learners.

The donation, which was handed over at St Charles Nursery and Primary School premises in Kagadi, included bookshelves, blankets, mattresses, footwear, clothes, soap, cooking oil, salt, posho flour, rice, beans, beds, sofa seats, a television set, footballs and sanitary pads, among other items.

Speaking during the handover, the Episcopal Vicar of Kagadi Vicariate, Monsignor Peter Kaberenge, said the beneficiaries include vulnerable children identified from different parts of the district.

He thanked Flobbeto Nursery and Primary School for the initiative, saying the donated items were necessities that would contribute to the children’s welfare and education.

“What they have given to us is God-given. They are not for luxury; they are necessities to us, and we promise to put them to good use to promote the education of our learners,” Kaberenge said.

He encouraged young people to develop a spirit of generosity and sharing, particularly towards children and families facing difficulties.

Kaberenge also highlighted some of the challenges facing St Charles Nursery and Primary School, including inadequate scholastic materials and a growing number of pupils, including learners with hearing impairments, which he said presents additional challenges for teaching and learning.

He said the school had previously faced challenges related to water shortages and inadequate dormitory facilities.

Dominic Karyarugokwo, the headteacher of Flobbeto Nursery and Primary School, said the charity drive is intended to extend a helping hand to vulnerable children.

He explained that the initiative is conducted annually and is supported by the school community, with pupils, parents and teachers contributing items and money towards the cause.

Karyarugokwo said the initiative is also part of the school’s efforts to promote corporate social responsibility by giving back to communities that support the institution.

Leonard Okwero, the 2026 charity drive coordinator at Flobbeto, said this year’s campaign was conducted under the theme “Stand in Their Shoes, Lift Them Up.”

He said the donation represents the sacrifice and commitment of parents, pupils and teachers who came together to support vulnerable children.

Okwero urged the beneficiaries to use the donated items responsibly and ensure they contribute to improved academic performance.

Allan Ampera, the children’s president at Flobbeto, said the initiative demonstrates that kindness goes beyond simply sharing material possessions.

Mbabazi Beatrice, the acting District Education Officer for Kagadi, described the donation as a timely gesture that could help reduce school dropout associated with a lack of scholastic materials.

“Besides donations, give us your good teaching methods so that we can also improve our academic performance,” Mbabazi said, while urging the beneficiaries to make proper use of the materials.

The headteacher of St Charles Nursery and Primary School, Mayanja Moses, said the institution was established in 2008 by the late Rev. Fr. Charles Kakooza as a charity centre with an initial enrolment of 35 pupils.

The school has since grown to 188 pupils and was established to provide boys and girls with religious-based education aimed at preparing them for self-reliance.

Mayanja said inadequate scholastic materials remain one of the school’s biggest challenges, with the shortage particularly affecting Primary Seven candidates as they prepare for the Primary Leaving Examinations.
