Police stops journalists from launching documentary on labour export

African Institute for Investigative Journalism said they will release the documentary on their YouTube Channel.

The African Institute for Investigative Journalism (AIIJ) has not been able to launch an investigative documentary detailing the works of labour export in Uganda after police from Kabalagala Police Station instructed Mestil Hotel where the screening was scheduled to close the venue.

The documentary titled On The Go – The Dark Side of Labor Externalization was due for screening this afternoon at Mestil Hotel.

Solomon Serwanja of AIIJ said they are disappointed and sad that the police continue to bar freedom of speech.

Speaking on Twitter Space, Anthony Masake, a lawyer, said a free and independent press is vital for society.

“The other thing we find concerning is that the police is at the centre of frustrating the launch yet their role is to protect you as you launch the documentary,” Masake said.

He emphasized: “There is no law that requires a journalist to launch such a doc to launch such a documentary at a private event.

Raymond Mujuni, also of AIIJ, said they owe it to the journalists and respondents who participated in making the documentary to have their work and voices published.

AIIJ said they will release the documentary on their YouTube Channel.
