AeroLink threatens to suspend flights to Kisoro Airport over neglect

According to Mugo, whereas their pilots have mastered the technique of landing in Kisoro over the years, their luck may run out as the runway continues to deteriorate and nothing is being done about it.

AeroLink, a private air service provider, has threatened to suspend flights to Kisoro Airport noting that the airport has “deteriorated drastically” the past year hence making it difficult to operate there.

In a letter dated November 2, 2023, addressed to the Civil Aviation Authority, AeroLink’s Accountable Manager, Catherine Mugo, explained that the airport is full of portholes, loose stones, and concrete slabs that cross the runway posing danger to the aircraft and its occupants.

“There’s also danger of tall trees on both ends of the runway making it even more difficult to maneuver there especially when the weather is marginal,” she said.

According to Mugo, whereas their pilots have mastered the technique of landing in Kisoro over the years, their luck may run out as the runway continues to deteriorate and nothing is being done about it.

It should be noted that Kisoro is one of the most popular districts with tourists as it hosts the majority of Gorilla families.

Mugo requested CAA to consider improving Kisoro Airport. “With the fast deterioration of the runway, AeroLink may be forced to suspend operations into Kisoro as the safety of our clients, pilots, and equipment is our most priority, ” she emphasized.
