A survey conducted by Makerere University School of Public Health indicated that Bunyoro and Tooro sub-regions lead the log with the highest numbers of teenage pregnancies.
The two regions stand at 28% while the national average is 25%. The report was presented to the various stakeholders in Bunyoro during a meeting held in Hoima City.
Dr Richard Mugahya, the assistant commissioner in charge of maternal and child health in the ministry of health, attributed the trend to the high rate of school dropout in the two respective regions.
Dr Nelson Naise, the Kikuube District Health officer, who is also the chairperson of DHOs in the region, says among other challenges, Bunyoro is also facing high Maternal and Infant mortality next to Kampala.
He has also expressed concern over the low uptake of contraceptives in Kikuube district adding that it currently stands at 25%.
Fredrick Makumbi, the lecturer of Makerere University School of Public Health that conducted the survey in 2022 under the performance monitoring for action (PMA), says some people are still using traditional methods of family planning which has increased the rate of unintended pregnancies.
Makumbi has requested the government to come up with an initiative of skilling the youth that has dropped out of school so that they can be self-reliant.
