Electoral Commission begins compilation of village registers ahead of grassroots elections
The compilation of the village registers forms part of the Commission's roadmap for the 2026 General Elections under the "Uganda Decides '26 – My Vote, My Voice" campaign.
The Electoral Commission of Uganda has commenced the nationwide compilation of the Village (LC I) Voters’ Register and Village Women Council Register as part of preparations for the forthcoming Local Council I and II and Women Council/Committees elections.
The five-day exercise, which runs from July 6 to July 10, 2026, is being conducted daily between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. at designated village registration centres across the country.
The Commission is urging all eligible Ugandans to participate by registering in the villages where they ordinarily reside.
To register, eligible residents are required to present either a National Identity Card or their National Identification Number (NIN).
According to the Electoral Commission, the exercise targets Ugandan citizens aged 18 years and above who ordinarily reside in the village where they intend to register and are willing to participate in grassroots democratic processes.

The Commission says the registers will serve as the basis for conducting the Local Council I and II as well as Women Council and Committee elections.
Over the weekend, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, appealed to Ugandans to actively participate in the electoral process while attending Holy Mass at Rubaga Cathedral.
Justice Byabakama encouraged citizens to embrace peaceful participation, exercise their civic responsibility and make informed electoral choices during the upcoming village-level elections.
He also called on the public to support the Electoral Commission’s efforts to organize elections that are free, fair and credible.
The Electoral Commission has emphasized that grassroots elections play a critical role in strengthening local governance by enabling communities to elect their village leaders and representatives through a transparent and inclusive process.
Eligible citizens who have not yet registered have been urged to visit their designated village registration centres before the exercise closes on July 10, 2026, to ensure they are included in the village registers and can participate in the forthcoming elections.
