Former Speaker Anita Among moved to government assurances committee as NRM reshuffles parliamentary committee assignments

Former Speaker Anita Among has been redesignated to Parliament’s Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation, as the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) effected fresh changes to its committee assignments in the 12th Parliament.
The redesignation, made by Government Chief Whip Jane Ruth Aceng, places Among, the Bukedea District Woman Representative, on the committee responsible for monitoring whether government fulfills promises, undertakings and commitments made on the floor of Parliament.
The Committee on Government Assurance and Implementation plays a critical oversight role by tracking government commitments and ensuring ministries, departments and agencies implement resolutions and assurances given to legislators.
The reshuffle also saw Opposition MPs take up the committee’s top leadership positions, with Francis Zaake, the Mityana Municipality MP, designated as Chairperson, while Anna Adeke, the Soroti District Woman MP, was named Vice Chairperson.
The latest committee changes also affected Among’s husband, Moses Magogo, the MP for Budiope East County, who has been dropped from the influential Budget Committee after serving on it for the past five years.
Magogo has instead been redesignated to the Committee on Human Rights, marking the end of his tenure on one of Parliament’s most powerful committees responsible for scrutinising government expenditure and budget allocations.
Another casualty of the reshuffle is Patrick Isiagi, the MP for Kachumbala County and an uncle to former Speaker Anita Among, who has also been removed from the Budget Committee.
The Budget Committee occupies a central position in Parliament, examining government budget proposals, public expenditure and fiscal policy before they are debated and approved by the House. Membership on the committee is often regarded as strategically important because of its influence over national resource allocation.
While no official explanation has been provided for the latest committee reassignments, the changes come as Parliament continues to constitute sectoral and standing committees for the new legislative term.
Among’s appointment to the Government Assurance and Implementation Committee places the former Speaker in a key oversight role where she will participate in scrutinising the government’s implementation of commitments made before Parliament.
The committee is expected to play an important role in strengthening accountability by ensuring government agencies honour commitments and report back to Parliament on the progress of implementation.
The latest reshuffle signals the continued reorganisation of parliamentary committees as the House settles into the business of the 12th Parliament, with both the ruling NRM and the Opposition positioning legislators in strategic oversight roles.
