Former ULS President challenges election exclusion in court
Ms. Nabasa is seeking a court order to overturn the decision, reinstate her name on the nomination list, and compel the ULS to conduct the elections in accordance with principles of fairness, neutrality, and compliance with the ULS Act and its regulations.
The Uganda Law Society (ULS) and its election committee chair, Moses Mwase, are facing a legal challenge from former ULS president Pheona Nabasa Wall, who alleges unfair exclusion from the upcoming elections.
Ms. Nabasa claims her candidacy for the position of ULS representative to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) was unjustly disqualified. Court documents reveal she submitted her nomination papers on December 3, 2024, which were verified by the Elections Committee.
However, later that day, ULS president Isaac Kimaze Ssemakadde released a final list of candidates that omitted her name.
The list, signed by Mr. Mwase, was also shared on his personal social media account, sparking allegations of bias.
Ms. Nabasa is seeking a court order to overturn the decision, reinstate her name on the nomination list, and compel the ULS to conduct the elections in accordance with principles of fairness, neutrality, and compliance with the ULS Act and its regulations.
She further accuses the ULS president of launching a social media campaign against her, publicly rejecting her candidacy. As part of her legal action, Ms. Nabasa is seeking general damages for the alleged injustice.
The case has stirred controversy within the legal fraternity, raising questions about transparency and equity in the ULS electoral process.
