Uganda’s football icon and former Cranes captain, Hassan Wasswa Mawanda, has been selected as one of the assistants for the draw of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.

The tournament will be jointly hosted by East African nations. The draw is set for January 15 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mawanda will be joined by Tanzania’s Mrisho Ngasa and Kenya’s McDonald Mariga to determine the tournament schedule, which will run from February 1-28, 2024.

Mawanda, a former Uganda Cranes midfielder with 75 national team caps, had a distinguished club career in Turkey and Saudi Arabia before retiring in 2021.

Ngasa, Tanzania’s most capped player with 100 appearances, is celebrated for his stints at top clubs like Simba SC and Yanga SC. Mariga, a Kenyan football legend, is remembered for his remarkable achievements with Inter Milan, including winning the UEFA Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup.

The draw will allocate fixtures for the 19 confirmed teams, including hosts Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and reigning champions Senegal. Other participants include Morocco, Guinea, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, DR Congo, Congo, Sudan, Zambia, Angola, and Madagascar.

The final two teams will be announced soon.
