Muhammad Ssegirinya, ‘Mr. Update,’ passes away at 37

Kawempe North Member of Parliament Muhammad Ssegirinya, affectionately known as “Mr. Update,” has died. The outspoken opposition MP, representing the National Unity Platform (NUP), passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at Rubaga Hospital in Kampala.

Ssegirinya, 37, had recently returned from Aga Khan Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment. A family member confirmed the heartbreaking news, saying, “It is sad, we lost him.”

Ssegirinya rose to prominence as a passionate advocate for human rights and social justice. His activism and vibrant social media presence earned him admiration, especially for his commitment to uplifting underprivileged communities.

Born in 1988 in Masaka District, Ssegirinya’s humble upbringing fueled his determination to fight for the marginalized. Raised as a Catholic, he later converted to Islam, adopting the name Muhammad.

Ssegirinya’s political career began in 2016 as a councillor for Kawempe North in Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA). In 2021, he won the Kawempe North parliamentary seat under the NUP banner, defeating nine opponents. Despite a legal challenge, his victory was upheld, solidifying his position as a champion for his constituents.

During his tenure, he was an outspoken critic of government policies and a relentless advocate for accountability. However, his political career was fraught with challenges, including arrests and allegations of involvement in rebel activities—charges widely dismissed as politically motivated.

Ssegirinya’s health began deteriorating following his detention in 2021 on charges of murder and terrorism alongside fellow MP Allan Ssewanyana. Released on bail in February 2023, he sought treatment abroad for injuries he claimed were sustained during incarceration.

Despite his health challenges, Ssegirinya remained undeterred, announcing in August 2024 his intention to seek re-election in 2026.

Ssegirinya’s death leaves a void in Uganda’s political landscape. Remembered for his humility, compassion, and relentless pursuit of justice, he leaves behind a legacy of courage and service.

He is survived by his family and a community that admired his unwavering dedication to the voiceless. His passing marks the end of an era for one of Uganda’s most vocal advocates for social change.
