NUP’s Deputy President for Buganda Muwanga Kivumbi granted bail in terrorism case as court defers ruling for six co-accused

However, the court deferred its decision on bail applications for six of the accused after directing them to present fresh substantial sureties.

The International Crimes Division (ICD) of the High Court has granted cash bail to National Unity Platform (NUP) Deputy President for Buganda, Muwanga Kivumbi, and several of his co-accused in a case that has drawn significant public and political attention.

The ruling was delivered on Thursday at the ICD in Wandegeya, where Kivumbi and his co-accused have been facing charges since their arrest in the aftermath of the 2026 general election.

However, the court deferred its decision on bail applications for six of the accused after directing them to present fresh substantial sureties.

Those affected are Ssewanyana Brian, Kayanja Calvin, Muwanguzi Brian, Owori Brian, Akankwasa Brian and another co-accused whose ruling was also postponed until next week.

As part of the bail conditions, Kivumbi was ordered to pay a cash bail of Shs10 million, while each of the co-accused granted bail is required to pay Shs1 million.

The court further directed Kivumbi to immediately surrender his passport and all travel documents. He was also barred from leaving Uganda without prior permission from the court.

In addition, Kivumbi and the other accused granted bail are required to report to both the International Crimes Division Court and the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court on the last Friday of every month.

The reporting requirement at the Butambala court will cease once the Director of Public Prosecutions commits the case to the High Court for trial.

Following the ruling, the National Unity Platform welcomed the court’s decision while expressing disappointment that six of the accused remained in custody.

“We are grateful to the legal team, party leaders, Members of Parliament, family, relatives, friends and the general public for demonstrating solidarity with these comrades who have braved this persecution since January of this year in the aftermath of the general election,” the party said in a statement.

NUP has maintained that the accused are political prisoners and has repeatedly called for their release, arguing that the charges against them are politically motivated.

State prosecutors have maintained the charges are being pursued in accordance with the law. The government has consistently rejected allegations that criminal prosecutions are used to target opposition politicians because of their political affiliation.

The six whose bail applications were deferred are expected to return to court next week after presenting fresh substantial sureties as directed by the court.
