Parliament urges public accounts committees to uphold accountability
Speaking during the opening of an induction programme for the committees at Imperial Golf View Hotel in Entebbe, the Speaker said the committees serve as the “eyes and ears” of Ugandans in monitoring how taxpayers’ money is utilised.
The Speaker of Parliament has urged members of the Public Accounts Committees to uphold integrity, professionalism and transparency as they take on their constitutional duty of ensuring proper use of public resources.
Speaking during the opening of an induction programme for the committees at Imperial Golf View Hotel in Entebbe, the Speaker said the committees serve as the “eyes and ears” of Ugandans in monitoring how taxpayers’ money is utilised.
He encouraged members to objectively scrutinise reports from the Auditor General and engage Accounting Officers constructively to strengthen public financial management and improve service delivery.
The Speaker noted that the credibility of Parliament’s oversight role over the next five years will largely depend on the commitment and performance of the committees.
He also pledged that Parliament’s leadership would uphold accountability, saying the institution must lead by example before demanding accountability from others.
The Speaker called on committee members to execute their mandate without fear or favour in order to support government’s goal of accelerating economic growth.
