Police probe fatal Masaka–Mbarara road accident

Traffic police in the Greater Masaka region are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal road accident that claimed two lives and injured six others along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway.

The incident occurred Friday evening at Kitasa Village in Lwengo District and involved a motorcycle and a Toyota Hiace passenger van.

According to police reports, the motorcyclist, known only as Moses, died at the scene due to severe injuries sustained in the crash. His 15-year-old passenger, Ian Lukyamuzi, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

The six occupants of the Hiace van sustained varying degrees of injuries after the vehicle overturned following the collision. Among the injured is retired Senior Commissioner of Police Godfrey Mwesigwa, alongside four minors and the driver of the van.

Police spokesperson Twaha Kasirye said investigators are examining whether speeding or improper road usage contributed to the crash. He noted that the wreckage has been towed to Kyazanga Police Station for mechanical inspection.

The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examinations.

The latest crash adds to growing concerns over road safety along the Masaka–Mbarara corridor, with authorities urging road users to exercise vigilance, especially during evening hours when visibility reduces and traffic movement increases.
