Locals of Entebbe Municipality continue to struggle with the rising water levels of Lake Victoria following increased rainfall in recent months.
Experts say the lake’s water levels are currently estimated to have increased by a staggering 14 metres compared to about 13 metres in 2020.
Uganda National Meteorological Authority (UNMA) predicted above-normal rainfall in selected areas including Entebbe last April. Entebbe received rains up to 106.8mm in a single day resulting in floods at the Entebbe International Airport.
Over 400 homes close to the shores have been affected by floods, particularly in Lugonjo village, which lies close to the Namiiro swamp.
Namiiro Swamp spans about 1000 hectares across Katabi Town Council and Entebbe Municipality in Wakiso District. At least 5000 households in the area have settled on this swamp.
Richard Ssekyondo, the LC3 chairperson of Entebbe Division B has acknowledged the severity of the flooding and the potential for further escalation.
“Despite the challenges, efforts to find a lasting solution continue with our partners and other government agencies, we are working endlessly to address the impact of the rising waters. People in the area are at risk of disease outbreaks such as bilharzia and cholera,”
Also, the Nakiwogo market has become inaccessible causing vendors to count losses.
Ssekyondo says plans to improve the market are embedded in their financial year 2024/2025.
“We have tried to lobby for more funding from our partners, but we have put aside funds to improve the market. We intend to grade, Gravel, and compact the ground. It all requires a rebuild of the market,” he said.
Ssekyondo also revealed that plans to improve the landing site and docking areas for ships and ferries are underway by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
In the recent past, the government through the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has asked people to vacate Namiiro swamp or be evicted, a move that is yet to be put into action.
According to the NEMA guidelines, 200 metres from the lake shore ought to be free of any human development to ensure the protection of the lake.
Entebbe Deputy Mayor, Charles Kabwama said the enforcement bodies have been slow to take action which can result in a disaster.
