Ssegirinya’s family backs Alex Luwemba for Kawempe North seat

Ssegirinya’s mother expressed confidence in Luwemba’s ability to continue her son’s legacy, emphasizing his understanding of the constituency’s needs.

The family of the late Kawempe North Member of Parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya, has endorsed Alex Lusswa Luwemba as his political successor. Luwemba, a longtime aide to Ssegirinya, received the family’s backing just a day after the MP’s burial.

Ssegirinya’s mother expressed confidence in Luwemba’s ability to continue her son’s legacy, emphasizing his understanding of the constituency’s needs.

“We trust Luwemba to uphold my son’s vision and continue advocating for the people,” she said.

Luwemba accepted the endorsement with gratitude, pledging to honor Ssegirinya’s legacy and calling on National Unity Platform president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu for support.

However, the endorsement has drawn mixed reactions. While some see it as a way to preserve Ssegirinya’s vision, others argue the decision was premature. Adding to the contest, one of Ssegirinya’s widows has declared her intention to vie for the parliamentary seat, promising fresh leadership for Kawempe North.

The Electoral Commission has 60 days to organize a by-election, setting the stage for what is expected to be a fiercely contested race. The family’s endorsement is likely to carry significant influence among voters.
