The government of Tanzania has re-allocated 74,000 hectares of conservation area for human activities, a senior official said on Monday.

The re-reallocation of the conservation area that was part of the Ruaha National Park in southern Tanzania was announced by a team of eight ministers tasked to resolve land conflicts in the East African nation.

Speaking on behalf of his fellow ministers, Selemani Jafo, the Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office responsible for Union and Environment, said the decision to re-allocation the conservation area to people living adjacent to the national park was aimed at enabling them to have land for running their economic activities.

“The 74,000 hectares of conservation area will be used by both farmers and livestock keepers,” Jafo said after the ministers had inspected demarcation of land for human use and for the Ruaha National Park in Mbarali district in Mbeya region.

According to the minister, 37,400 hectares of land will be used for livestock keeping and 36,600 hectares of land will be used for farming.

Juma Homera, the Mbeya regional commissioner, said the demarcation of the land for human use and conservation area was going well.
