What use is Janet Museveni as education minister, MP questions
Kabanda alleged that the education minister, also the First Lady, has never stepped in the House since the start of the 11th Parliament.
In a tone that sent shivers down the walls of the Parliamentary Gallery, Butambala District Woman Member of Parliament, Aisha Kabanda, made the bold move to question the relevance of Janet Museveni, President Yoweri Museveni’s wife, as the Minister of Education and Sports if she can’t attend to matters raised in Parliament by Members of Parliament.
Kabanda alleged that the education minister, also the First Lady, has never stepped in the House since the start of the 11th Parliament. She noted the First Lady’s absence if a total disregard for the House.
However, the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, was quick to defend the First Lady by saying that the education ministry with four ministers is well represented in the Parliament and that the First Lady is always on Zoom whenever she is needed.
Among revealed that the First Lady will be in Parliament tomorrow and requested the MPs to raise all the issues when she is in the house.
President Museveni, usually accompanied by his wife, is set to address the Parliament on matters of national importance tomorrow afternoon. It is likely that Among was referring to the expected presence of the First Lady alongside his husband.
Kabanda’s outrage emanated from the various issues MPs from different parts of the country were raising such as school buildings falling because of resuming rains.
These issues as raised, and the tabling of the ministerial policy statement and budget estimates for the financial year 2023/2024, needed the senior minister’s response but the First Lady wasn’t in the House.
It was evident that DR. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, the State Minister for Primary Education was struggling to offer satisfying answers and this riled some MPs who thought the best response bearing solution would be got from the First Lady.
