41 individuals to receive medals on Independence Day
The theme recognizes Uganda's history and the compatriots who patriotically provided and sustained the leadership, ideology and momentum towards self-rule.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will be honouring 41 individuals with national medals for the extraordinary roles they have performed in uplifting the Republic of Uganda since the acquisition of independence.
Uganda gained independence from the UK on 9 October 1962 with Queen Elizabeth II as head of state and Queen of Uganda. Every year, Uganda remembers this day with a national commemoration event and holiday.
Milly Babalanda, the Minister for Presidency, told journalists at Uganda Media Centre that the theme for this year’s Independence Day celebrations is “Sustaining a United and Progressive Nation: Taking Charge of Our Future as a Free Nation”.
The minister said the theme recognizes Uganda’s history and the compatriots who patriotically provided and sustained the leadership, ideology and momentum towards self-rule.
“The theme is rooted in the ideals of our independence founding fathers who visualized a country based on the rule of law; democracy, socio-economic transformation and good governance. The NRM is taking charge of our future by pursuing a deliberate and determined science-led vision to transform our country,” she stated.
Babalanda said the awards ceremony is one of the key activities scheduled for Independence Day slated to take place in Kitgum district on October 9 2-23. The awards are provided for by the National Honours and Awards Act, 2001.
Babalanda also revealed that the Office of the President working jointly with a German international Non-Government Organization called BAZUNGU-EV, together with Prince Kimbugwe Foundation offering free eye surgical services for all people with eye challenges in the Acholi sub-region.
The exercise of screening began on 25th September and ended on September 28, 2023. A total of 1,163 patients were screened. Charmar News has learnt that the surgeries began yesterday October 2, 2023, and will end tomorrow Wednesday, October 4, 2023.
The minister further noted that out of the 1,163 patients who were screened, 153 will undergo eye surgeries, 557 will be provided with eyeglasses and others will receive treatment.
