Govt hits dead end in pursuit of Abiriga killers

Abiriga was shot dead together with his bodyguard near his home in Kawanda along the Kampala-Gulu highway in June 2018.

Parliament’s Human Rights Committee has informed Members of Parliament (MPs) that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) admitted to having hit a dead end regarding the prosecution of the killers of former MP Ibrahim Abiriga because there were no clear leads found during the investigations.

“No person has been charged as the evidence collected so far does not implicate any specific individual for the commission of this offence,” Fox Odoi, Chairperson of Parliament’s Human Rights Committee, reveals.

“The investigations are continuing and the ODPP team is continually evaluating the evidence on the file to determine any progress made in this regard. This is however not yielding much as there are no clear leads in these investigations as all previous leads hit dead ends,” he added.

Parliament also learnt that the DPP ordered the Police to close & put away the case file involving the murder of Ramathan Walyendo who was killed by a stray bullet during the 2018 by-elections in Bugiri, due to a lack of sufficient evidence to warrant a prosecution of the perpetrators.
