Uganda Red Cross Society gets Fresh Dairy milk powder donation to support vulnerable communities

On 9th August 2024, Kiteezi residents were struck with a garbage slide that has since left over 1000 families affected, and at least 35 people dead and an unaccounted for number, still missing. 

Fresh Dairy has donated milk powder worth Two Billion, Two Hundred Million Uganda shillings (2.2 Billion UGX) to Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) towards emergency support focusing on enhancing the health and nutrition of Kiteezi garbage slide survivors, refugees and host communities in Kiryandongo refugee settlement.

On 9th August 2024, Kiteezi residents were struck with a garbage slide that has since left over 1000 families affected, and at least 35 people dead and an unaccounted for number, still missing.

Additionally, in 2024, Uganda has recorded numerous new refugee arrivals majorly from Sudan that are being settled in Kiryandongo refugee settlement. In total, the settlement hosts 119,103 refugees and host community individuals.

While at Fresh diary offices in Industrial area, Dr. Naphtal Baguma, the Director Supply Chain and Estates Management at Uganda Red Cross Society said, “Uganda Red Cross Society plays an auxiliary role to Government of Uganda and has a mandate of saving lives especially during emergencies. Currently, we are handling the Kiteezi garbage slide situation and have set up temporary mobile shelters for the over 1000 displaced families.We are providing Psychosocial support, relief aid among others services.”

Additionally, since early this year, URCS has set up mobile shelters and a mobile clinic in response to the refugee influx from Sudan totaling up to 119,103 individuals in Kiryandongo refugee settlement. We thank Fresh Diary for the milk powder donation which will be distributed to both the Kiteezi and Kiryandongo refugee settlement families, focusing more on mothers and children.”

Baguma concluded by calling upon more partners to support humanitarian emergencies because it takes multi-sectoral approach to save lives.
