FDC’s Nandala Mafabi kicks off 2026 presidential bid with pledge to ‘fix the economy,’ create jobs

Addressing supporters and the press shortly after his nomination at the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters, the seasoned politician presented himself as a reliable and dedicated leader. "For all of you who have seen me during this period, believe and know that I am a worker, a servant you can rely on," Mafabi declared.

Nandala Mafabi James Nathan, representing the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), today became the first aspirant to be duly nominated on Day 2 of the Presidential Nominations for Uganda’s 2026 General Elections.

Having fulfilled all requirements under the Presidential Elections Act, Cap 179, Mafabi immediately launched into a campaign focused on economic revival, job creation, and national reconciliation under the slogan, “Fixing the Economy, Money in Our Pockets.”

Addressing supporters and the press shortly after his nomination at the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters, the seasoned politician presented himself as a reliable and dedicated leader. “For all of you who have seen me during this period, believe and know that I am a worker, a servant you can rely on,” Mafabi declared.

He articulated a new vision for Uganda, emphasizing unity and reconciliation from the outset. “I come to this election with a new menu that all Ugandans should embrace. I do not come with hatred or anger; I come to rebuild the bridges that have been broken,” he stated, signaling a commitment to fostering national cohesion.

Mafabi swiftly turned his attention to what he described as alarming levels of poverty under the current National Resistance Movement (NRM) government. He lamented that “only 26% of the population are upholding the rest of Ugandans,” painting a stark picture of economic disparity. He positioned the 2026 election as “the only opportunity to change this narrative by voting FDC.”

A significant promise targeting the youth was also unveiled, offering tangible support for their future. “I want to assure the youth that in my government, jobs will be created, and every graduate will be given UGX 1 million as startup support to begin their journey in life,” Mafabi pledged.

He explained his economic philosophy by drawing a contrast with the current administration: “The reason we want to fix the economy is because, in 1986, our current President said the problem was security and that has since been fixed. What remains is insecurity in our homes and in our pockets.”

Challenging the narrative of protecting “gains” under the current administration, Mafabi questioned, “You say you want to protect our gains. You want to protect gains of poverty, you want to protect gains of people suffering, or what?” He reiterated his core purpose for contesting: “I am in this election to serve the people of Uganda, to ensure you have better lives than you do now.”

Beyond economic promises, Mafabi also advocated for fundamental reforms in the political landscape, particularly concerning the influence of money. “Removing money from politics is very important. We often end up voting for money instead of leaders,” he remarked, calling for a shift towards merit-based leadership. Leveraging his extensive background in the cooperative sector, he added, “I come with experience in the cooperative world, and I will ensure that cooperative societies function effectively. This will enable the people of Uganda to earn a decent living.”

Following his successful nomination, EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, together with Commission members, officially handed over a vehicle with security detail to FDC’s presidential candidate, Nandala Mafabi, marking the formal commencement of his presidential campaign.
