Electoral Commission announces roadmap for LC and Women Council elections
The exercise will be conducted in all 71,214 villages across the country and is intended to ensure that eligible voters are correctly registered and able to participate in the upcoming elections.
The Electoral Commission has officially unveiled the roadmap, key dates, processes and procedures for the forthcoming Local Council and Women Council elections, marking the beginning of preparations for one of Uganda’s largest grassroots electoral exercises.
Speaking at a press briefing, Electoral Commission Chairperson Simon Byabakama Mugenyi announced that the update of the voters’ register for the Local Council I (LC I), Local Council II (LC II) and Women Council elections will take place from July 6 to July 10, 2026.
The exercise will be conducted in all 71,214 villages across the country and is intended to ensure that eligible voters are correctly registered and able to participate in the upcoming elections.
Justice Byabakama said the register update exercise is a critical component of the electoral process, providing an opportunity for new eligible voters to be included while ensuring that existing records are accurate and up to date.
“The Electoral Commission has today announced the dates, programme, processes and procedures for conducting the forthcoming Local Council and Women Council elections,” he said.
The Commission urged all eligible citizens to take advantage of the five-day exercise to verify their details and ensure they are properly registered in their respective villages.
According to the Electoral Commission, the update exercise will target citizens who have attained the voting age since the last registration exercise, those who may have changed their place of residence, and voters whose details require correction.
The Local Council and Women Council elections are among the most important grassroots democratic processes in Uganda, as they determine leadership at village and parish levels and provide citizens with an opportunity to participate directly in local governance.
Justice Byabakama emphasized the Commission’s commitment to conducting transparent, credible and inclusive elections and called upon local leaders, political stakeholders and the public to support the electoral process.
He also encouraged citizens to cooperate with electoral officials during the register update exercise to ensure the compilation of a clean and accurate voters’ register.
The Electoral Commission is expected to release additional details regarding nomination dates, campaign periods and polling schedules as preparations for the elections progress.
The forthcoming elections will cover village-level Local Council committees, Local Council II structures and Women Councils, which play a key role in community mobilization, local administration and grassroots representation across the country.
With preparations now underway, the Commission has urged Ugandans to actively participate in the electoral process, beginning with the voter register update exercise scheduled for July 6–10, 2026.
