IGP calls for discipline, teamwork as police expand grassroots security services
The police chief further encouraged the recruits to embrace collective responsibility, foster a supportive working environment and remain focused on contributing to Uganda's socio-economic transformation agenda.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abbas Byakagaba has called on police recruits and serving officers to uphold discipline, teamwork and a strong sense of purpose as the Uganda Police Force continues to strengthen security services across the country.
The remarks were made during two separate engagements in Yumbe and Nakasongola districts on June 18 and 19, respectively, highlighting the force’s focus on professional development and the expansion of policing services to grassroots communities.
During a visit to Police Training School Ikafe in Yumbe District on June 18, Byakagaba met recruit trainees who are preparing for their pass-out parade and assessed their readiness in key policing skills.
The trainees demonstrated various competencies acquired during their training, showcasing their preparedness to join active service in different parts of the country.
Addressing the recruits in what he described as a lecture of opportunity, the IGP emphasized that excellence in policing is anchored on teamwork, discipline and commitment to duty.
He reminded the trainees that peace and security remain critical pillars for national development and urged them to recognize their responsibility in safeguarding the country’s stability.
“Peace and security are the foundation of national progress, and every officer has a crucial role to play in protecting them,” he said.

He noted that a professional and dedicated police force is essential in supporting the country’s aspirations of advancing beyond lower-middle-income status through sustained peace and security.
A day later, the IGP was represented by Joseph Obwona at the launch of the new Nakitoma Sub-county Police Station in Kafu, Nakasongola District.
Speaking on behalf of Byakagaba, Obwona said the establishment of police stations at sub-county level reflects the Uganda Police Force’s commitment to bringing services closer to communities and enhancing local security.
He noted that effective service delivery begins at the grassroots and that extending police infrastructure to sub-counties will strengthen government presence and improve public access to security services.
“The extension of police services to the sub-county level forms the foundation for effective government service delivery and grassroots security,” Obwona said.
He added that the construction of sub-county police stations is part of an ongoing nationwide initiative aimed at enhancing accessibility to police services, strengthening community policing and improving response to crime.
According to police leadership, the initiative is expected to promote closer collaboration between law enforcement agencies and local communities while enabling faster intervention in addressing security concerns.
The launch of the Nakitoma Sub-county Police Station comes as the Uganda Police Force continues to invest in infrastructure, personnel training and community engagement programmes intended to improve service delivery and strengthen public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
The two engagements underscore the force’s broader strategy of building a professional police service while expanding security coverage to support national development and community safety.
