Why treat us like zombies, Erias Lukwago on MPs bail release drama
MPs Ssegirinya (Kawempe North) and Ssewanyana (Makindye West) were yesterday granted a Shs20 million bail each by Masaka High Court presided over by Justice Lawrence Tweyanze.
The Lord Mayor of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Erias Lukwago, also the lead lawyer in the case involving MPs Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya, who are accused of killing 26 people in Greater Masaka in 2021, is not amused that the government continues to disrespect them and the country’s judicial system.
“This Museveni regime has killed this country to the marrow that even for one to get justice in this country, it has to be presumed and imagined that it is some “Big brother” somewhere that has to come and say get out of this place,” Lukwago said while appearing on NBS Television’s Morning Breeze program.
“Why treat us like we are zombies? We are responsible people, lawyers, and concerned parties. Deal with us in a civil matter and comply with the law. Inform us accordingly about where you have delivered our people. Why do you do things in a “Kiyekela” way?” he wondered.

However, close to midnight, Lukwago and a team of lawyers, friends and family, had not received the MPs despite camping at Kigo Prison expecting to return home with the legislators. It was later that a whistleblower informed them that the MPs had been dropped off at their preferred destinations by security.
“We had someone whisper to us that the Hon. Allan Ssewanyana would have been dropped at Masulita at his granny’s place and Hon. Ssegirinya at his mother’s place in Mengo,” Lukwago told NBS Television. Adding: “I spoke to the wife of Hon. Ssewanyana this morning. She drove to Masulita and she confirmed that the Hon. Allan was there and arrangements are being made to take him to a health facility to get treatment,”
Lukwago explained that the effort to have the MPs freed has been a nasty and frustrating experience and a disgusting journey. You only had to keep fighting because it was a matter of life and death. he said. “I am short of words to express what we have gone through with the relatives of these legislators. It’s really traumatizing,” he said.
