Bunyoro Kingdom, UNOC partner to promote urban farming

Farmers comprising 50% women and youth have been selected by the kingdom from farmer’s associations in 15 counties of the kingdom.

Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom and the Uganda National Oil company (UNOC) have partnered to promote urban farming to improve food production in the sub-region through an agricultural development programme.

The training for the programme has been launched by the Prime Minister of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Andrew Kirungi Byakutaga at the kingdom headquarters in Hoima City.

Byakutaga and Stellah Maria Biwaga, the board member of UNOC, said that farmers will be trained in urban and backyard farming so that they can increase food production and supply companies in the oil and gas sector.

Biwaga explained that as a company, they embarked on supporting farmers to produce quality food.

The minister for agriculture and production in Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, Wilson Wayirindi, has noted that the kingdom targets to train more than 150 farmer groups thus encouraging farmers to engage in poultry and livestock.

UNOC has contracted Stanbic Business Incubator to train trainers in the sub-region.

The Chief Executive Officer of Stanbic Business Incubator, Tony Atoa, has said the training will be conducted at their centre in Bujumbura, Hoima City.

William Kasigazi Donanto, the Hoima West Resident City Division Commissioner, commended Bunyoro leaders for standing firm and opposing the European Union resolutions that wanted Uganda to halt the process of Oil extraction.
