Journalists most affected as Kin Kariisa fires 20% of Next Media workforce

In an economy that has been battered by the COVID19 pandemic, Kariisa went into an ambitious expansion drive that saw him introduce Sanyuka TV Prime, AfroMobile App and revamping Next Radio.

Next Media, the ambitious media conglomerate owned by youthful businessman Kin Kariisa has today fired an estimated 20% of its workforce, especially long-serving journalists and newsrooms’ support staff.

The media empire said this has been done in an attempt to remain relevant in a highly competitive environment.

“With the ever-evolving global trends and media consumption habits, our business needs to continue effectively serving its consumers, partners, and stakeholders. We believe now is the best time to realign and act towards remaining relevant in a highly competitive environment,” Karisa is quoted as saying.

Next Media owns NBS TV, Next Radio, Sanyuka TV, Sanyuka TV Prime, Salaam TV, Nile Post and AfroMobile App.

Reports indicate that the Human Resource Manager of Next Media, Paul Lwanga, on Tuesday summoned the affected staff to announce the heartbreaking news.

Lwanga then asked the laid-off staff to stop reporting for duty effective Thursday, December 1, 2022, immediately hand over company property and sign the necessary exit papers.

Some of the affected employees from NBS acknowledged that the company has no money and has been financially struggling while others cited unfairness.

He recently showcased the luxurious and iconic Next Park in leafy Kololo which is home to the Next Media affiliates.
