Julita Coffee Works Limited has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom in a move aimed at boosting coffee production and supporting farmer incomes across the Bunyoro sub-region.

The partnership is expected to contribute to Uganda’s national target of expanding coffee cultivation, with a focus on increasing acreage in Bunyoro through commercial farming and farmer support initiatives.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Palace, the Managing Director of Julita Coffee Works, Julius Michael Tumwebaze, said the company will focus on strengthening coffee development by equipping farmers with practical skills and access to markets.

“We are committed to boosting and expanding farmers’ incomes in Bunyoro through training on the right coffee varieties, proper crop management practices, and ensuring access to reliable markets,” Tumwebaze said.

He added that the company is working with both local and international partners to scale up production, with special emphasis on regions with high potential such as Bunyoro.

The Prime Minister of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom, Andrew Byakutaaga, welcomed the initiative, noting that it will play a key role in improving household incomes among farmers in the region.

“This partnership will help transform coffee farming from subsistence to commercial production, allowing our people to benefit from the growing demand for coffee,” Byakutaaga said.

He also highlighted that while coffee has traditionally been grown on a small scale in Bunyoro, the region is now embracing modern, large-scale production methods to tap into national and international markets, supported by its fertile soils and favorable climate.

Julita Coffee Works officials revealed that the company has already secured about 50 acres of land in the region, where coffee planting has commenced as part of the initial phase of the project.

The partnership underscores growing efforts to position Bunyoro as a key contributor to Uganda’s coffee exports, with stakeholders optimistic that increased investment, training, and market access will drive long-term growth in the sector.
