Museveni Announces International Airport Construction in Mbarara with China & Brazil

Nyakisharara in Mbarara chosen for landmark airport to boost Western Uganda’s global connectivity and economy

In a major infrastructure announcement, President Museveni has revealed plans to build a new international airport at Nyakisharara in Mbarara District, in partnership with Chinese and Brazilian companies.

According to the President, the new airport will be constructed to match the scale and standard of Entebbe International Airport. This facility is expected to significantly shorten global flight routes — cutting travel times on certain routes by as much as 15 hours compared to current longer routes.

The airport project is part of broader efforts to transform Mbarara and surrounding regions into a hub of trade, tourism, agriculture and overall economic growth. Officials say the infrastructure will spur new investments, create jobs, and improve regional connectivity.

To support the airport project, the government also plans upgrades to major road networks in Mbarara District — including road connections that will improve access to the future airport site, supporting trade, logistics, and movement of goods and people.

Local leaders and residents welcomed the announcement, describing it as an opportunity to unlock the full economic potential of Western Uganda. If all goes according to plan, the new airport could reshape the region’s infrastructure landscape and open a new chapter in national development.
