The Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament, Hellen Nakimuli, has died following an unsuccessful surgical procedure, sending shockwaves through the political community.
In a statement, the National Unity Platform (NUP) described her passing as a “heavy blow,” saying the party was deeply devastated by the loss. It extended condolences to her family, friends and political colleagues.
NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi said the news was “terrible” and “shocking,” adding that it was a difficult moment for both the party and the country.
Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya confirmed that the legislator passed away at Alexandros Medical Center, where she had been admitted for an operation that was not successful. He described her death as a tragedy.
The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, revealed that he had spoken to the late MP earlier in the day as she coordinated a planned meeting of Opposition Members of Parliament in her role as Shadow Minister for Information.
According to him, she had indicated that the procedure she was going in for was not major. He noted that she had driven herself to the hospital before the surgery.
“Unfortunately, she has not made it out of theatre,” he said, confirming that she died during the procedure.
Her sudden death has left colleagues in disbelief, particularly given that she had remained actively engaged in her parliamentary duties just hours before the operation.
Tributes are expected to continue pouring in as the country mourns a serving legislator whose life was cut short. Funeral arrangements had not been announced by press time.
