One Year to Go: East Africa counts down to historic AFCON 2027
The 2027 tournament will represent a historic milestone for the three host countries, none of which has previously hosted the Africa Cup of Nations.

The countdown to Africa’s biggest football spectacle has officially begun, with exactly one year remaining before the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Kenya-Tanzania-Uganda 2027 kicks off on June 19, 2027.
For the first time in history, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will jointly host Africa’s premier football tournament, marking the return of the competition to East Africa for the first time since Ethiopia staged the tournament in 1976.
The month-long tournament, which will culminate in the final on July 17, 2027, is expected to attract more than 1.5 million fans across the three host nations and a global television audience exceeding 3.2 billion viewers.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has described the event as a landmark moment for African football and for East Africa’s growing stature as a destination for major international sporting events.
Historic First for East Africa
The 2027 tournament will represent a historic milestone for the three host countries, none of which has previously hosted the Africa Cup of Nations.
CAF officials say preparations are progressing across the region as governments invest heavily in stadium upgrades, transport infrastructure, accommodation facilities and other key services needed to stage a successful tournament.
The competition will be played under the theme “PAMOJA”, a Swahili word meaning “Together,” symbolizing unity, cooperation and shared progress among African nations through football.
CAF is still consulting with the three governments and Local Organizing Committees to determine which country will host the final draw scheduled for March 2027, as well as the opening match and the championship final.
Road to AFCON Already Underway
While the hosts have already secured automatic qualification, attention is now turning to the qualifying campaign that will determine the remaining 21 teams that will join Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania at the finals.
The journey to AFCON 2027 began in May when 48 nations learned their qualification paths during the official draw held in Cairo.
Several continental giants, including Morocco, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Senegal, Algeria, Nigeria, Cameroon, Tunisia, South Africa and DR Congo, will begin their qualification campaigns in September 2026.
The qualifiers will be played across three FIFA international windows:
* Matchdays 1 & 2: September 21 – October 6, 2026
* Matchdays 3 & 4: November 9 – 17, 2026
* Matchdays 5 & 6: March 22 – 30, 2027
Although Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are guaranteed places at the finals as hosts, they will still participate in the qualification process, with only one additional team advancing from each of their respective groups.
Economic and Tourism Opportunities
Beyond football, the tournament is expected to generate significant economic benefits for the three East African nations.
Industry experts project increased tourism arrivals, heightened international visibility, growth in hospitality revenues and improved infrastructure development in the lead-up to the competition.
For Uganda, the tournament presents an opportunity to showcase the country’s sporting facilities, tourism attractions and investment potential to millions of viewers worldwide.
The event is also expected to stimulate local businesses, particularly in the hospitality, transport, retail and entertainment sectors.
Growing Global Appeal
The Africa Cup of Nations has evolved into one of the world’s most watched sporting events.
Recent editions hosted by Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire attracted record audiences and demonstrated the growing commercial and sporting value of African football.
CAF believes the 2027 edition has the potential to be one of the most successful tournaments in the competition’s history, thanks to the combined hosting model and the passion for football across East Africa.
With 365 days remaining until kick-off, excitement is steadily building among football fans across the continent as preparations gather momentum.
For East Africa, AFCON 2027 represents more than a football tournament. It is an opportunity to showcase regional unity, celebrate African excellence and leave a lasting legacy for future generations of players and supporters.
As the clock ticks toward June 19, 2027, the message from CAF and the host nations is clear: East Africa is preparing to welcome Africa and the world to a historic celebration of football under the banner of PAMOJA — Together.
