Uganda reaffirms strong ties with Islamic Development Bank as LEGS project workshop concludes
Uganda and the Islamic Development Bank strengthen cooperation as the LEGS Project review highlights progress in refugee and host-community development.

Uganda has renewed its commitment to deepening cooperation with the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) following the conclusion of a high-level workshop for the Livelihoods, Employment and Governance for South Sudanese Refugees and Host Communities (LEGS) Project.
The workshop, attended by government officials, project implementers and IsDB representatives, reviewed progress under the LEGS initiative—an ongoing programme aimed at strengthening socio-economic inclusion, improving livelihoods, and enhancing service delivery in refugee-hosting districts.
Government officials praised the Islamic Development Bank for its financial support, technical guidance, and continued confidence in Uganda’s refugee-response model. They noted that Uganda’s refugee policy—which grants refugees freedom of movement, access to land, and integration into public services—remains one of the most progressive globally, making partnerships like the LEGS project essential for sustainability.
During the closing session, Uganda reaffirmed its commitment to meeting project targets, strengthening accountability systems, and ensuring that host communities benefit alongside refugees. Officials also emphasized that the partnership with IsDB goes beyond humanitarian work, extending into infrastructure, education, health, and economic empowerment.
Representatives from the Islamic Development Bank applauded Uganda’s leadership in managing one of the world’s largest refugee populations and expressed readiness to explore additional areas of cooperation to support national development priorities.
The LEGS project is part of broader efforts to boost resilience, reduce dependency, and promote long-term development in districts with high refugee presence, ensuring that both refugees and host communities can thrive.
