Violation of court rules, abuse of children dominate 2023 state of rule of law report

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has urged the government to implement the rule of law by arresting all individuals responsible for the misuse of iron sheets meant for the Karamoja region such that they are held accountable for their actions.

This call was made by Bernard Oundo, the president of Uganda Law Society, at the launch of the State of the Rule of Law Report 2023 held at the Mestil Hotel in Kampala.

According to Oundo, the 2023 quarterly Report on the State of the Rule of Law was conducted between January and March of this year. The aim was to observe and promote human rights as it is required in the constitution of Uganda of 1995.

The reports among other out siding challenges they faced include the violation of the court rules /orders by security agencies.

“And in this quarter, we are putting a spotlight on the violation of children’s rights that is on the increase. We recommend that the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development picks interest in making specific inquiries on this vice,” he said.

He further called upon the government to arrest all government officials involved in the iron sheet saga to be tried in courts of law.

While at the same function the Director CID, Tom Magambo, said, NGOs who complain that their offices are broken into should also ensure that they operate within the law.

The ULS is the Bar Association for Lawyers in Uganda. They specialize in negotiating with and lobbying the profession’s regulators, government and others to offer training and advice.

They help to protect and promote lawyers across Uganda.

The Uganda Law Society also provides professional services, resources, support and benefits to its members and engages in activities designed to improve access to justice.
