It has been a tumultuous week for the National Unity Platform (NUP) so far; the latest mishap being government heavy-handedness that has seen the party’s secretary general David Lewis Rubongoya arrested numerous times, at different spots today.

According to Rubongoya activity on social media, he was first arrested in the morning in Wandegeya and later in the afternoon in Natete. The police also arrested his driver.

“Today morning while driving via Wandegeya with my driver Agaba Gordon, a traffic officer stopped us and claimed that my car is wanted on allegations of having committed a crime during the recently concluded by-election in Omoro.” he posted on Twitter at 3:19 PM.

He followed up that tweet with another update: “We were briefly arrested at Wandegeya Police station & later I was released & proceeded to attend Hon Ssegirinya & Sewanyana’s court. However, Gordon was later driven to Natete Police Station. After court, I passed by Natete Police Station to follow up & I’ve also been re-arrested.”

This is the first major time that Rubongoya is being arrested by police ever since he abandoned working for the government to join the People Power movement that morphed into NUP, a functional political party.

The president of NUP Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi reacting through his Bobi Wine Facebook page described the reasons for arresting his party members as bogus.

“For me, it’s not surprising. The Museveni regime, like all dictatorships, thinks it will weaken and subdue us by intimidation and harassment. Hang in there comrades, it will be well.” Kyagulani posted.
