Ugandan chef attempts to break Guinness world record for the longest cooking time
It should be noted that the Guinness World Records does not pay record holders but its role is to merely celebrate the world's best, to inspire ordinary people and to entertain and inform.
Dorcus Bashema Kirabo aka Mama D, a Ugandan chef is attempting to break and set a new Guinness World record for the longest cooking hours by an individual from December 23 to December 27, 2023.
The current record is 119 hr 57 min 16 sec and was achieved by Alan Fisher (Ireland) in Matsue, Shimane, Japan, from 28 September to 3 October 2023 who dethroned Nigeria’s chef Hilda Effiong Bassey, also known as Hilda Baci, who cooked for 93 hours and 11 minutes.
“Resilience, persistence and energy is all I pray for through out this life changing process. For God and my country,” she posted on her X account.
With support from peers, friends and strangers on social media, Bashema is attempting to cook for 120 or more hours. The record is being set at Zoe’s Restaurant in kira.
By press time, Bashema had cooked for 33 hours with over thirty dishes.
According to the Guinness World Records website, there are rules Bshema should follow in order to break the record.
“There must be at least two items being prepared or cooked at any time,”
“A sous-chef is permitted to assist in prep work, washing up, and cleaning the kitchen area, but all the cooking must be done by the individual attempting the record.”
It should be noted that the Guinness World Records does not pay record holders but its role is to merely celebrate the world’s best, to inspire ordinary people and to entertain and inform.
“For these reasons, we do not pay record-breakers for their achievements or for carrying out a record title attempt,” reads an excerpt on the GWR website.
If she wins this attempt, she will join other Ugandan Guinness World Recorder holders like Raymond Kahuma, who made the largest rolex (chapati and rolled eggs), weighing 204.6kgs in 2021; King Oyo as the youngest reigning monarch; the 1976 Shortest Hostage Rescue by Israelis at the Entebbe Airport, Joshua Cheptegei, the world 10,000 metre fastest runner who clocked 26 minutes 11 seconds in Spain in 2020.
