How G4S guards pulled off a UGX 1billion Bullion Van heist

Police in Old Kampala are investigating a shocking heist involving two G4S security guards accused of stealing over UGX 1 billion during a cash transit operation in Kampala.
According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police, the theft occurred on November 19, 2024, during a routine fund transfer from Lubowa to Nakasero.
The suspects allegedly diverted the bullion van, registration number UAJ 199T, and made off with UGX 1,069,420,000 and USD 14,474.
The abandoned van was discovered in Nabunya, Rubaga Division, with two rifles left inside, sparking immediate investigations.
Police efforts quickly yielded results with the arrest of Otim Ambrose Richard in Kwania District. He was found with UGX 117 million, believed to be part of the stolen cash.
“We are making every effort to recover the remaining funds and apprehend all those involved,” Owoyesigyire assured the public.
The incident serves as a wake-up call for cash transit operators in Uganda, as such brazen heists have been rare in recent times. Investigations continue, with updates expected as more suspects are tracked down and evidence gathered.
