Former Busiro South Member of Parliament Charles Matovu has died following a sudden health complication, sparking grief among fellow legislators, political leaders and members of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi confirmed Matovu’s death on Thursday evening, October 22, 2026, saying the news was shocking and expressing condolences to his family and friends.

According to accounts shared by colleagues, Matovu developed a sudden medical complication on Monday night. He was reportedly admitted to Lubaga Hospital before being transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for further investigations, where he later died.

Matovu represented Busiro South in Wakiso District during the 11th Parliament from 2021 to 2026. At the time of his death, he was pursuing a court petition challenging the election of NRM’s Kenan Opio.

Beyond politics, Matovu was a committed member of the Parliamentary Football Club, representing Uganda at East African inter-parliamentary tournaments held in South Sudan, Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda. Colleagues remembered him as a humble, quiet and dedicated teammate who helped the team achieve success.

NUP announced plans to hold a tribute at its headquarters in Makerere-Kavule as colleagues gather to honour his life and contribution to the struggle for a better Uganda.

His death comes at a time when his election petition was before the High Court in Entebbe, where he was challenging Opio’s victory.

Matovu is survived by family, friends and colleagues who have mourned his sudden passing and prayed for his soul to rest in eternal peace.
