UPDF promotes 3rd infantry division commander Wilberforce Sserunkuma to Major General

The promotion was announced through a radio message issued by the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

Brigadier General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, who currently commands the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) 3rd Infantry Division, has been elevated to the rank of Major General.

The promotion was announced through a radio message issued by the UPDF Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The message cited Maj Gen Sserunkuma’s longstanding loyalty and outstanding contributions to peace and security efforts, both within Uganda and regionally, tracing his service back to the days of the National Resistance Army (NRA).

General Kainerugaba’s communication specifically highlighted Maj Gen Sserunkuma’s pivotal roles in Uganda’s liberation struggle and his sustained service across various operational theaters under the UPDF.

Before his current assignment, Maj Gen Sserunkuma served as Deputy Division Commander of the 2nd Division, based in Mbarara, where he was responsible for overseeing security operations across Greater Western Uganda. His extensive military career also includes participation in Operation Iron Fist, a significant military campaign targeting the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) across northern Uganda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Later, his service extended beyond Uganda’s borders, with deployments in critical peacekeeping and enforcement missions in Somalia and South Sudan, underscoring Uganda’s commitment to regional stability. Domestically, he commanded the 405 Brigade in Kotido District, taking charge of security in North Karamoja and its strategic borders with South Sudan and Kenya.

His rise through the ranks continued with his appointment as Deputy Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division stationed in Moroto. He subsequently assumed the role of Division Commander, a position in which he has been instrumental in leading pacification operations throughout the Karamoja Sub-region, actively working to ensure peace and stability in Greater Eastern Uganda.

Maj Gen Sserunkuma’s elevation aligns with the UPDF’s ongoing efforts to restructure and strengthen its command leadership. This strategic move aims to enhance the force’s capacity to effectively address evolving security challenges within the region.
