New female inmates’ ward at Luzira Women Prison ready for commissioning
Uganda Prisons Service completes modern 350-capacity facility built to improve dignity, security, and accommodation for female inmates

Kampala, Uganda – The Uganda Prisons Service (UPS) has finalized the construction of a new female inmates’ ward at Luzira Women Prison, marking a significant milestone in efforts to reduce congestion and enhance the welfare and dignity of women in custody.
The fully completed, one-floor storied facility – now awaiting commissioning – has the capacity to accommodate 350 inmates under modern, secure, and humane conditions.
The ward boasts first-class sanitary installations, ample ventilation, spacious circulation areas, and well-organized bed units designed to promote comfort and order. It also includes dedicated washing spaces, secure storage areas, private bathing facilities, and appropriate lighting systems tailored to the needs of female inmates.
According to UPS, the enhancement aligns with the Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, which emphasize gender-sensitive infrastructure and humane standards of living.
The new ward is expected to ease congestion at Luzira Women Prison and improve service delivery across the facility.
