Tembea Safaris is positioning itself as a leading corporate safari and travel operator, offering tailored, high-end experiences for clients who value privacy, efficiency, and impact.

As East Africa’s tourism sector continues to evolve, new players are redefining travel experiences through innovation and specialization. Tembea Safaris is positioning itself as a leading corporate safari and travel operator, offering tailored, high-end experiences for clients who value privacy, efficiency, and impact.

In this interview, Managing Director Ngamije Mugisha Junior shares insights into the company’s vision, unique offerings, and future plans with Charmar News.

Tembea Safaris is positioning itself as a leading corporate safari and travel operator in East Africa. What inspired the founding of the company, and what vision continues to drive its growth today?
My name is Ngamije Mugisha Junior, and I hold a Master’s degree in Hotel and Tourism Management from Cyprus International University. When I returned from Europe, we founded Tembea Safaris to serve high-profile clients, such as celebrities and government officials, who value privacy and tailored travel solutions.

At the time, there was a gap in East Africa for companies that could fully meet such demands. Inspired by the Swahili word “Tembea,” meaning “travel” or “walk,” we envisioned a corporate travel company focused on delivering personalized, discreet, and professional safari experiences.

The travel and tourism industry in East Africa is highly competitive. What sets Tembea Safaris apart from other operators in the region?
What sets us apart is our strong focus on corporate travel and our mobile application, which is available on both the Play Store and Apple Store. Our niche is providing corporate safari experiences tailored specifically for clients across East Africa.

Your company focuses strongly on corporate safari experiences. How has this niche evolved, and what demand trends are you seeing among corporate clients?
The corporate safari niche has evolved into a high-value, purpose-driven segment where quality, customization, and impact are just as important as the destination itself.

Corporate clients are increasingly seeking travel experiences that strengthen relationships and reward performance. At the same time, there is a clear opportunity to further promote local tourist attractions.

Tembea Safaris emphasizes sustainable travel. Can you share specific initiatives your company is implementing to promote environmental conservation and community empowerment?
We operate under the principle “Travel That Makes a Difference.” At Tembea Safaris, we believe in business travel that not only meets client goals but also creates a positive impact.

We support environmental conservation, empower communities, and reinvest 20% of our annual revenue into local initiatives, particularly those supporting persons with disabilities. Additionally, our clients participate in tree planting activities in every destination they visit.

You also highlight accessibility in your services. How is Tembea Safaris making travel more inclusive for diverse groups, including persons with disabilities?
We are digitalizing tourism and developing virtual reality (VR) solutions. Through VR goggles, individuals who are unable to physically visit parks will be able to experience tourist attractions and observe wildlife in their natural habitats using their devices.

East Africa continues to attract global attention as a tourism hub. In your view, what opportunities and challenges define the region’s tourism growth today?
East Africa’s natural attractions, such as mountain gorillas, present immense tourism opportunities. However, challenges such as poor transportation infrastructure and inconsistent customer service still exist. Addressing these requires coordinated promotion efforts and cultivating a culture of treating every client with exceptional care.

How is technology shaping your operations—from bookings and customer experience to marketing and logistics?
Technology is transforming our operations end-to-end. Clients can easily make bookings digitally, while mobile communication tools allow us to respond instantly and enhance customer experience.

We leverage digital marketing through social media and search engines, and technology also enables efficient itinerary planning and coordination with hotels and service providers.

How are you adapting to the growing demand for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism?
We are responding to this growth by strengthening both our service offerings and operational capacity. We are positioning ourselves as a one-stop partner for corporate travel and events by delivering professional, innovative, and impactful MICE experiences.

What does a typical Tembea Safaris experience look like, and how do you ensure consistent quality across different destinations and client categories?
A typical Tembea Safaris experience is well-planned, professionally managed, and enriched with local authenticity. We have strong systems in place to ensure consistent quality across East Africa, whether for a small executive trip or a large corporate group.

From economic shifts to climate change and evolving travel preferences, how are global trends influencing your strategic planning?
Global trends are guiding us to build a resilient, sustainable, and tech-enabled business. We are focused on being an eco-friendly partner that is responsive to changing client needs while consistently delivering high-quality travel experiences across East Africa.

What role does Tembea Safaris play in creating opportunities for young professionals?
Tembea Safaris serves as a platform for growth by equipping young professionals with the skills, experience, and opportunities needed to build sustainable careers in tourism and beyond. We are also launching initiatives targeting youth in tourism, including partnerships with Ugandan universities offering hospitality and tourism programs.

Looking ahead, what are the key expansion or innovation plans for Tembea Safaris over the next five years?
Over the next five years, we plan to expand across Africa, offering tech-enabled corporate and MICE solutions. We will continue to promote sustainable tourism, drive community impact, and deliver seamless, high-quality travel experiences.

What advice would you give to emerging entrepreneurs looking to venture into the tourism and travel sector in East Africa?
Success in East Africa’s tourism sector requires passion, strategic planning, and a commitment to quality service. Embrace technology, build strong partnerships, prioritize sustainability, and invest in people. Start small, learn quickly, and scale strategically for long-term impact.
