Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested a man accused of impersonating a DSS officer and using a fake firearm to intimidate and extort motorists and commuters in Abuja.
The suspect, identified as Moferewa Maiye, was arrested after DSS operatives reportedly tracked him to his hideout near NITEL Junction along Adetokunbo Ademola Way, Wuse II, following credible intelligence.
According to security sources, Maiye was found wearing a DSS tactical uniform and in possession of a fake pistol, which he allegedly used to present himself as a security operative while demanding money from members of the public.
The suspect, who claimed to be from Agbajojun Village in Mopamuro Local Government Area of Kogi State, reportedly told investigators that the uniform and equipment belonged to his late brother, Monday Maiye, who was a DSS personnel.
He remains in DSS custody as investigations continue into how he acquired the uniform and other items, as well as whether he was involved in similar cases of impersonation and extortion.
The DSS has warned against impersonating security personnel, saying such acts undermine public confidence and can be used to commit criminal offences.
The arrest comes amid continued efforts by security agencies to crack down on individuals using fake uniforms and equipment to deceive and exploit members of the public.
